Do you have numbness, tingling, or weakness in your wrist and hands? You may have been diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome. What now?
The most common recommendations are wrist splinting, anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroid injections and if they don’t work you may be recommended for surgery. Did you know that more than 50 percent of the people who’ve undergone carpal tunnel surgery report that their symptoms returned within 2 years of their surgery?
Other more conservative options include muscle work, acupuncture, physical therapy and occupational hand therapy which are mostly focused on relieving the symptoms.
Did you know that carpal tunnel most likely starts with nerve root irritation from the neck? As high as 90 percent of carpal tunnel patients were found to have nerve irritation starting from their CERVICAL SPINE(NECK).
It isn’t likely your wrist is the only place that gets entrapped. The median and ulnar nerve stems from the Brain which transitions into the spinal cord, nerve roots come out of the holes from the cervical spine, travel under your collar bone, down your arm, forearm, wrist and finally hand. The nerve can get irritated with compression or inflammation along the whole route from Brain to hand.
Just like when you step on a hose, there will be less water coming out the other end. If you have a structural shift in the neck and it’s irritating a nerve root or the spinal cord, every muscle, organ, and cell that relies on that nerve to function receives less information from the brain to HEAL and FUNCTION properly.
In an example of double crush phenomena, the patient has nerve root irritation at the cervical spine. Less information travels down the arm, consequently allowing the elbow or wrist area to be more susceptible to damage and further compression of the median nerve. This causes “carpal tunnel”.
